====Yesterday 12/2/09, we took a bus down to the town office, We got off the bus and went into the town office. Mrs. Gilman didn't know where she was going, and took us the wrong way. Once we were in the right place, a woman named Lisa Gilliam started talking to us about Roland LeVallee. Roland was a man that had taken pictures of Winthrop in the early 1900's. He had given the town office 2,500 pictures to the town office. They were negatives at the time. The town office had to develop the images. Which cost 35$ a piece. She also talked about the 51 pictures on the wall. They were very interesting. They showed the buildings where things like subway, U.s cellular, ned's place, and the law office. It was a great experience to look at all of those old pictures of where we live now. We are very great-full for Roland's gift.

My visit to the town office was my first time ever being there, and it was actually pretty interesting . The photo's on the wall were very well taken and neat to learn about. My favorite picture would have had to been the picture of the class Halloween picture when all the kids were dressed up and had the interesting home made masks. The workers there were friendly and knew information on most of the pictures, it's insane to think that it was once the town of Winthrop. Rolland LaValle seemed like a generous, and a well respectable man who cared for his community. Lissa Gillian is doing a wonderful thing and continuing to do what he was trying to do and get these pictures out and have them get a lot of attention. - Frank Harris
I am always delighted to see old photos. They truly are a history of the town of Winthrop. Roland LaVallee was an archivist for Winthrop. Over 2500 pictures documenting the daily life in Winthrop is the real gift. With out these photos none of us would "see" the history of Winthrop. My favorite part was seeing the old negatives and learning about the impact of Roland LaVallee's pictures. Photos document who we are, they allow us to share and inspire as well as preserve the moments in our lives that are fleeting.

When we went to the town office it was intresting seeing Winthrop in the past because soo much has changed the community was much closer than it is now they use to have bowling allies and stores and dinnners that sat right on maine street i would have loved to lived in that time period but the picture that intrested me the most was the picture at norcosse point where they had the carnavil with the lady with the beard and the most intresting sisters it was a great experince and they lady who taugh us about it was wicked nice :)- Abby F.
To me history is a way of living these moments again. History is a way for us to connect with our older relatives as well. When you bring the history into your own community and compare it to today, it really moves you and makes you think. Rolland LaVallee was a very generous man who, in my opinion, changed the history of this community and of us. People who have lived here for generations will really appreciate this hall and the meaning behind it. People will really notice the effort that Lisa Gillian put into this. It seems to mean a lot to her and I know it means a lot to me. I live to be a part in this community and this trip really opened my eyes to how serene and connected the town of Winthrop was. Today it seems like all we connect in is sports. History means a lot to me and learning about the history of my town means that much more.

Looking at the art work was very cool it was cool because if you picture Winthrop now and look at those photos you can see the changes we have made . It was also very cool to see Wilsons dollar store because my Grandfather owned it and it was cool to see it because i had heard many stories about it . I loved looking at the old sports because it is so different you see the pictures of what they wore and how they played and how the players look players . I think it would be a cool idea if the did pictures of pictures like the bicylce and did it over the gernerations over 50 years and it would be very amazing to see how it has changed.

I thought it was so cool to see the photos of Winthrop from so long ago! I love history and I loved the photos, they were awesome. I learned a lot about Winthrop and how it used to be. It was sooooo much better back then! I liked the sports pictures and the way they were taken made them even better. I liked the one of the boys basketball team that was taken from the top of the hoop and it was sweet! I wish I could take pictures like that! i like to see that kind of stuff and I don't really get to see it that often it was a cool experience. =)

I really liked this experience because I got to take time to look at new art work and to also go there and explore the old Winthrop I didn't know. It was cool to also learn about the man that took them. I could not believe that he donated all those old negatives! I think he is a very big inspiration to respect your community and to save special points in time. I also liked to go through and talk about each picture because Winthrop looked so different back then that I didn't even recognize the town. I liked seeing how most things changed but some things in this old town stayed the same. As for the people in all the pictures I wish knew who all of them are but I don't. Seeing the sports teams were really funny pictures! I think that we really got a great start to this years art walk project 2009. And around here somewere I hope that someone is also taking simple pictures so people can see what life was in Winthrop 2009.

Looking at these old photos was like going through a time machine and seeing winthrop change over time. It was especially cool for me because, ya seeing old photographs is cool, but seeing photos from this time period in particular is just very neat because its one of the time periods I would have loved to live in. What Rolland LaVallee did was just incredble. He made something great of his life and made impacts on many people with his photography. His works of art are still being valued and appreciated today. That is something I want to do; do something great with my life, just like he did. Maybe not photography, but do something special with my life. Today wasn't just a feild trip, it was something truely extraordinary, and inspires a lot of people to do great things.

Wow that visit to the town office was really cool! I have lived in Winthrop almost all my life and I never even thought about the history. The old pictures were cool to, I never thought that Winthrop could change so much. Like today I was driving down main street with my dad and I looked at the mill and where some of the old shops and businesses had once been and realized that most of them are gone now. And some of the places like the loge on main street or that small dinner I never thought that they would be there because it does not look like they were there at all. Going in to the town hall and seeing the pictures was like going back in time. especially when I saw the Adell building. I knew that is was once there and I remember using it. But I guess I had forgot what it looked like. Also just walking in to the town office made me think of when I was younger and was in like first grade and the town office was part of the grade school. And lastly the thing that amazed my the most was that there was once a fair that came to Norcross Point. I never would have guessed.It is a great thing that Roland Lavallee took all these great pictures so now we will know a little more about the history of Winthrop and what it looked like back then.

Sorry I was band from online last night. So I liked going to the town office I would have never geussed these pictures were there. I thought that the way winthrop has presered history. I would love to go back and help frame or something. Dad and I learned a lot about the town with that calendar. My favorite picture was the fair on nor cross point. I would not have thought they held a fair there. This feild trip was really fun I cant wait to talk more about this trip.

As you can tell from all of the other entries, our art class took a trip down to the town office. We looked at pictures of Winthrop during the 1800's and 1900's. It was pretty amazing to see our past. Winthrop was such a beautiful town back then. People walked everywhere and visited each other daily. There were small stores and bowling alleys. There was also a fair at Norcross Point. I with that was still there. The water was gorgeous, just like today. I'm glad I live in Winthrop. I'm also very fortune that Roland Lavallee took all of these pictures. If he hadn't, we wouldn't have much to see our past.
